#6. Community Services for Persons with Developmental Disabilities 1999
NOTE: POST A MESSAGE TO MAKE SUGGESTIONS!
WHEREAS, there are estimated to be over 78,000 persons with developmental disabilities in Tennessee, and
WHEREAS, the majority of services provided to citizens of Tennessee with developmental disabilities are directed toward persons with cognitive disabilities; and WHEREAS, the service and support needs of persons with developmental disabilities, which include persons with physical and/or sensory disabilities, are programmatically similar to the needs of persons with cognitive disabilities; and
WHEREAS, current best practices in the field of disabilities state that persons with disabilities are better served in community-based settings rather than large, congregate, institution-like settings; and
WHEREAS, persons with developmental disabilities should have full access to integrated services in the community which reflect natural patterns of living; and
WHEREAS, to be independent, productive, and active in community life, all citizens must have employment and employment related opportunities, housing options, transportation, and family support services;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that TCSW support the principle of community integration for all persons with developmental disabilities and encourage systems changes related to the design and implementation of services for persons with developmental disabilities that enhance the family support system and provide access to services and community integration.
